Postkolonyalizm açısından Robert Müller'in „Tropen. Der Mythos der Reise“ isimli romanı

In this study, the novel "Tropen. Der Mythos der Reise" by the Austrian writer Robert Müller is discussed from the perspective of postcolonial literary theory. Robert Müller, who has been forgotten in literary studies today, conveys the traces of German colonial history and colonial politics to the reader with his novel. The historical colonial discourses and propaganda are believed to influence the fiction and plot in the literary works. With this in mind, this study tries to place the novel in the context of German colonial history and to draw attention to the effects of the colonial discourses in the novel. In this study, the question of what sort of stereotypical cultural descriptions are formed, especially as a result of encountering a foreigner and what kind of role colonial discourses play in these descriptions are discussed. The thesis also tries to determine the colonial desire, the concept of hybridity, and the resulting reverse-mimicry situation in the novel. In addition, the research addresses the legitimacy of the violent events under the disease diagnosis, which appears in both the colonial discourses and the literary works of colonialism and examines how this legitimacy appears in the novel. Examined from the perspective of postcolonialism theory, this novel is discussed under the concepts of imitation, hybridity, alienation, othering, discourse, and desire. In the analysis of the novel, it has been researched how these concepts appear in the plot. Therefore, it was highlighted that the German colonial history and the colonial discourses were addressed in the novel. Based on the results of the analysis, it was emphasized that the foreigner and cultural characteristics depicted in the novel were constructed under the influence of colonial stereotypes. The protagonist exhibits the characteristics of colonial thinking and it has been established that there are colonial and sexual desires in the novel. In addition, it was stated that there is a construction of culture and identity that arises through the mimicry of the foreign. Finally, the analysis of the novel has shown that the novel legitimizes colonial physical violence by portraying these acts of violence as tropical diseases and attributing certain pathological symptoms to these behaviors.Bu çalışmada Avusturyalı yazar Robert Müller’in “Tropen. Der Mythos der Reise” adlı romanı postkolonyal edebiyat teorisi ile ele alınmaktadır. Günümüzde edebiyat çalışmalarında unutulmuş bir yazar olan Robert Müller bu romanında Alman sömürgecilik tarihinin ve politikasının izlerini okuyucuya aktarmaktadır. Tarihsel kolonyal söylemlerin ve propagandaların edebi eserlerdeki kurgu ve olay örgüsünü etkilediği düşünülmektedir. Bunu göz önünde bulundurarak bu çalışma romanı Alman sömürgecilik tarihi bağlamına oturtup, kolonyal söylemlerin romandaki etkilerine dikkat çekmeye çalışmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, özellikle yabancıyla karşılaşma sonucunda ne tür stereotipik kültürel betimlemeler oluşur ve bu betimlemelerde kolonyal söylemlerin nasıl bir rol oynadığı sorusu ele alınmaktadır. Çalışma ayrıca romandaki kolonyal arzu, melezlik kavramı ve buna bağlı oluşan tersine taklit durumunu saptamaya çalışır. Ayrıca sömürgecilik döneminin gerek toplumsal söylemlerinde gerekse edebi eserlerinde göze çarpan şiddet olaylarının, hastalık tanısı altında meşrulaştırılması çalışmada ele alınıp bu durumun romanda nasıl işlendiği araştırılmaktadır. Postkolonyalizm teorisi bakış açısıyla incelenen bu roman, taklit, melezlik, yabancılık, ötekileştirme, söylem ve arzu kavramları altında ele alınmıştır. Romanın analizinde bu kavramların olay örgüsünde nasıl karşımıza çıktığı araştırılmıştır. Bunu yaparak Alman sömürgecilik tarihinin ve kolonyal söylemlerinin romanda ortaya çıktığı saptanmıştır. Analiz sonuçlarından hareketle, romanda tasvir edilen yabancının ve kültüre ait özelliklerin kolonyal stereotiplerin etkisi altında oluşturulduğu vurgulanmıştır. Ana karakter sömürgeci düşüncenin özelliklerini taşıdığı ve romanda kolonyal ve cinsel arzuların mevcut olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca romanda taklit yoluyla gerçekleşen bir kültür ve kimlik inşası olduğu saptanmıştır. Son olarak romanın analizi, romanın şiddet eylemlerini tropikal hastalıklar olarak tasvir ederek ve bu davranışlara belirli patolojik belirtiler atfederek sömürgeci fiziksel şiddeti meşrulaştırdığını göstermiştir
